3D Modelling for the Barbican 'Tunnel Visions : Array' Projection Mapping
The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre in the City of London and the largest of its kind in Europe. It is at the heart of the “Culture Mile” project, a 10-15 year attempt to regenerate parts of the City using external artworks, linking cultural institutions and bringing the area to life with imaginative collaborations and exciting events. As part of Barbican OpenFest, a weekend of inspiring art and entertainment, the Beech Street tunnel under the Barbican Estate was closed to traffic and turned into a huge blank canvas for a 3D projection-mapped spectacular light and sound installation.
Our client was commissioned to undertake the projection mapping in the tunnel space. To be able to turn the tunnel into a display surface for video projection our client would need a fully detailed 3D Model. This is where APR Services stepped in to provide that solution.

Objective
To provide a full detail 3D model of the tunnel and surrounding buildings.
Services Provided The point cloud of the tunnel was captured at night over a period of 4 hours from terrestrial 3D laser scanning using a Faro X330 laser scanner. This scanner is ideal for this type of scanning due to it's ease of maneuverability. Almost 1 billion points were captured. The subsequent 5mm density point cloud was used to create a detailed model of the tunnel. Over 5000 panels and 700 lights in the ceiling and over 700 panels in the walls were modelled. This comprehensive model provided the display surface needed for the animations to be projected on to. |

Key Successes
APR's 3D model was used by our client to create a spectacular light and sound installation in the temporarily pedestrianised Beech Street tunnel over the weekend March 17th and 18th 2018. Digital projections were used to transform the tunnel into a stunning visual realisation of a piece of music. The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus recorded 'Karawane' by Finnish composer Esa-Pekka Salonen, which provided the soundtrack, as vivid colours and images flickered across the walls in response to the music. A free event, the show played hourly performances throughout the day and evening to an audience of thousands.
