3D Modelling Usher Hall for 'Five Telegrams' at the Edinburgh International Festival
Usher Hall in Edinburgh is a five-star Edwardian concert hall situated in the west end of Edinburgh. It has hosted concerts and events since its construction in 1914 and is a true Edinburgh Institution. During August it is one of the main venues for the Edinburgh International Festival that takes place and there is a performance in the hall almost every night.
Marking the start of the 2018 Edinburgh International Festival Usher Hall was transformed by The Aberdeen Standard Investments Opening Event: Five Telegrams. 'Five Telegrams' is an audio and visual work celebrating Scotland’s Year of Young People and reflecting on the centenary of the end of the First World War. The work in collaboration with Usher Hall is a joint commission for the Edinburgh International Festival, BBC Proms and 14-18 NOW. A brand new score by Scottish composer Anna Meredith, based on material found in the Imperial War Museum was produced to accompany the display.
Our client were commissioned to undertake the projection mapping on to the exterior of Usher Hall, but to be able to turn this iconic building into a display surface for video projection our client would need a fully detailed 3D model. This is where APR Services stepped in to provide that solution.

Objective
APR were commissioned to laser scan and produce a full detail 3D model of the Usher Hall for 3D printing and set up of projection mapping by our client. Services Provided
A highly accurate 3D model was produced from the point cloud data, providing the display surface needed for the animations to be projected on to. The 3D printed Model of Usher Hall (right) used for projection planning by our client (courtesy of 59 Productions).

Key Successes
APR's 3D model was used by our client to create extraordinary and spectacular projection mapping on to Usher Hall. The free event took place on the evening of August 3rd 2018. The hall was transformed by the event as an opener to the Edinburgh International Festival, with a vast 3D projection-mapped animation using the facade of Usher Hall as its canvas, with a recording of Anna Meredith's Five Telegrams performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra as the soundtrack. The hall became an immersive environment of colour, texture, sounds and sensations that placed the audience at the centre of a visually stunning digital display. |
