Hampstead Parish Church Aerial Drone and Laser Scanning Survey

Hampstead Parish Church is located in the London Borough of Camden. This forward thinking church required solar panels to be installed on the roof. For planning permission purposes and to establish the suitable roof position for the panels a full external survey of the church was required and this is where APR Services were able to help.
Objective
APR Services were commissioned to undertake the surveying of the church in order for the client to plan the location of solar panels on the roof. The church at it's highest point is 35 metres tall and is surrounded by an extensive thick tree canopy. Due to to the confined nature of the church and safety aspects of surveying the roof it was most suited to a combination of terrestrial laser scanning, elevated scanning and an aerial drone survey.

Services Provided
Terrestrial 3D laser scanning was undertaken over 1 day using the Faro X130 laser scanner. This scanner was used to get the speed and density of scan points necessary to pick out detail, with the elevated tripod used in areas of dense tree canopy. In total over 300 million points were captured.

The aerial drone survey was operated from the ground over 1 day. To match the dataset from the drone to the dataset from the terrestrial laser scanner, it was essential to get a good coverage. Over 100 million points were captured for the roof.

Processing
Target-to-target registration was used for the terrestrial laser scan data in FaroScene. In order to register the aerial drone data numerous common points between the terrestrial and aerial drone data were picked.

Deliverables
A land survey, detailed roof plan and 2D elevations of the church were provided to the church.

Key Successes
This project was a good example of the versatility of terrestrial 3D laser scanning and aerial drone surveys. Highly detailed plans and elevations were created and the data captured is an archive which can be revisited to create additional drawings or visualisations at any time without returning to site.
