Laser Scanning the roads around the Olympic Park, Stratford:
A Social Distancing Survey

Do you have a busy location that needs surveying whilst ensuring socially distancing rules are adhered to in the current situation? No problem for the Laser Scanning and CAD divisions at APR Services.
Our Laser Scanning division has been out and about carrying out socially distanced scanning at multiple locations. Most recently this has included surveying the roads and pavements around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Westfield's Stratford City Shopping Centre for a new road layout. So, how did we do this safely under current restrictions, whilst ensuring social distancing rules are followed in these busy locations?
In short, we used high resolution laser scanners to speed up the process and our staff carried out the surveys from 3am, when the sites were quiet. What's more, laser scanning only required one surveyor on site to operate the scanner, and ensured that these complex environments were captured much faster than using traditional techniques. In addition no return visits are needed due to the comprehensive content of the data captured. This ensures that the surveyor is physically on site for the minimum amount of time, in the safest manner possible, for both our staff and the public.

Scanning was completed using the RIEGL VZ-400 laser scanner. With an operating range of up to 600 metres, the scanner allows the high resolution capture of large areas at distance, further adding to the safety of the public and our surveyor who would not have to enter the road space.

The laser scanning quickly provided a complete and detailed set of point cloud data for our remote CAD teams in Barnet and St Austell to be able to draw the road survey accurately without any need to be in an office setting. In addition the team in St Austell beta tested a new and innovative piece of software to extract line work from the point cloud data for this project.

Whether it is a standalone survey or part of a wider suite of services laser scanning is highly cost effective, and as a complete snapshot the data provides an invaluable archive for routine monitoring or future exploitation.

With remote observation of laser scanning surveys, site access is minimal and in some cases may not even be needed at all. As a result social distancing rules encompassing the safety of staff, our clients and the general public are fully adhered to.
