Lion Salt Works Laser Scanning & Measured Building Survey

The Lion Salt Works in Marston Cheshire is the last surviving Open Pan Salt Works in the country. English Heritage upgraded its status from a Grade II listed buildings to a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The building complex dates from the nineteenth century but the works itself closed in 1986 and a trust set up in 1993 to preserve the site and work towards eventually restoring it to a unique heritage museum.

Funding from associated partners including DEFRA and English Heritage was provided to enable the appropriate surveys to be undertaken and a conservation plan to be drawn up. APR was able to provide the surveying services needed to support the process.
Objective
To record in full detail the entire pan house complex and the separate salt store providing full internal and external plans, sections, elevations plus a ‘fly through’ movie of the external point cloud.

The surveying undertaken by APR would provide a historical record, and form the part of the base material for a full written conservation plan, with preservation and restoration recommendations for the site.

Services Provided
3D Laser Scanning was undertaken using a laser scanner to capture the complex dilapidated structure.

Scanning was carried out from a number of locations within each pan house to achieve full coverage due to the number of shadows caused by the beams.
Deliverables
Over 40 detailed elevations, plans and sections were produced using either Cloudworx for AutoCAD or Pointools software.

In addition a fly through visualisation of the point cloud data was provided to the client.
Picture
Multiple targets were placed within each scan and observed with a
reflectorless total station from main control points.  Such targeting allowed the scans to be joined together into a seamless model.

An approximate 10mm point density on the inside and outside of the buildings provided sufficient coverage to draw all the individual timbers required.
Key Successes
The surveying undertaken by APR provided a comprehensive historical record of the site and it's numerous buildings. It formed the basis for a full written conservation plan, with preservation and restoration recommendations for the site.

Following the completion of the conservation plan significant Heritage Lottery Funding was awarded to enable the preservation and restoration process to be undertaken. The site underwent major redevelopment and restoration from 2012 to 2014 and opened to the public as a unique heritage attraction in summer 2014.

The site has been saved and subsequently removed from the Heritage at Risk Register as featured on the BBC News.
