Jacobean Theatre Laser Scanning and 3D Modelling

Following on from APR's significant involvement in providing laser scanning services, point cloud visualisations and 3D models of the main Shakespeare's Globe, the second phase of work surrounded Sam Wanamaker's vision which extended beyond the Globe itself. In addition to a purpose-built education centre, there was intended to be a second indoor 'Jacobean' theatre space, known as the 'Sam Wanamaker Playhouse'.

When Shakespeare’s Globe finally opened in 1997 after more than 27 years planning and four years construction, the Indoor Jacobean Theatre was left as a shell, blocking off doors and adding floors and partitioning tocreate rooms for education workshops and rehearsals. 14 years after the theatre opened, the Globe embarked on the physical realisation of this archetypal Jacobean indoor performance space based on plans developed through exhaustive research led by the Globe’s Architecture Research Group. APR was there to help in the planning and development.
Objective
To undertake a full 3D Laser Scanning survey at the start of the construction venture to enable the project management team to establish the exact dimensions of the space and to discover any hidden issues that may affect the design and build process of the new theatre.

Services Provided
Using a Faro 3D laser scanner, APR captured around 3 billion millimetre-accurate measurements to detail the inside and outside of the complex building shell that complete with false doors and steps, and the foyer area including a restaurant and shop.

The billions of individual measurement points were used as a reference to create a visually stunning, highly accurate, 3D replica of the existing structure and space for use in the design and construction process.

Phase one of our work with Shakespeare's Globe can be found here.
Deliverables
Full point cloud data and a highly accurate 3D model of the existing Jacobean Theatre and Foyer structure and space, the data of which tied in directly to the data and existing models APR provided previously for the main Globe theatre.
Key Successes
APR’s highly accurate 3D model replica has helped the project architects, Allies and Morrison, most complete recreation of an English renaissance indoor theatre ever attempted. It fully informed their design and quantified the interior dimensions of the space that the indoor theatre will occupy.
The project has resulted in a new candle-lit, 340-seat theatre, faithfully recreated with tiered and pit seating. Allies and Morrison, also designed a new foyer as part of an upgrade to the public spaces serving both the Globe and the indoor theatres.

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse opened to the public on January 9th 2014. BBC News - Sam Wanamaker Playhouse: A Jacobean theatre on Bankside.
