Welsh Chapel - Laser Scanning & 3D Modelling

The 19th century Welsh Chapel on Shaftesbury Avenue, London is a Grade II listed former Presbyterian church built in 1888 by James Cubitt. It is composed of a galleried central space with an umbrella dome, a large basement, and attached manse. After being empty for 15 years it was transformed into the home of the notorious Limelight Club in 1985. In its heyday it was Britain's top nightclub destination. Following the decline of the nightclub it was taken over by a pub chain in 2003 and converted into a sports bar, but in 2010 this too eventually ceased trading.

Today the building is privately owned, and in 2012 the arts organisation Stone Nest began the process of restoring and redeveloping the building to its former beauty, transforming it into a flexible performance space. The space, once complete, will offer British and international artists a platform for exploration across a diverse range of dance, theatre, music, video and performance art.
Objective
Our client Stage Technologies required a detailed 3D model to assist with the fitting of all lighting, mechanical and engineering plant work into the voids above the main domed hall as part of the ongoing restoration and redevelopment of the chapel into a performance space.
Services Provided
Laser scanning was carried out using a Faro Focus laser scanner to cover each area required, based on achieving a density of around 5mm to capture all detail. Scanning was completed in each of the 5 roof space voids and within the main domed hall from each balcony, and from a scaffold tower in the middle of the room.

As the voids were completely isolated, to ensure accurate positioning guide holes were drilled from each void through to the dome and a 2m pole was installed prior to scanning to allow for us to accurately position each void point cloud by modelling each end of the rod and transforming the clouds into position.

Deliverables
A detailed 3D model was provided using Rhino and the Pointools point cloud plug-in for Rhino. Images of the model can be seen below.
Key Successes
APR's 3D model was used by Stage Technologies  to plan the fitting of all equipment and lighting fixtures into the voids above the main domed hall, as part of the ongoing work by Stone Nest to restore the space to its former beauty.
